  1. To Charlene, Malcolm and Family,

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your wonderful mother. Many of my favourite childhood memories involve spending time at your home on Slayer Street. Mrs. Fitzgerald was always a warm and welcoming presence, even when I am sure she was tired and getting ready to work another night shift.

To this day, smelling fresh bread evokes memories of her kitchen where she made her beautiful rolls. I still have a Lopi sweater that she made for me many years ago.

She was so kind and lovely and I am hopeful that the many great memories you have will serve as some comfort to you at this sad time.

    With warmest regards, Alanna Murphy

    • Alanna, Thank you for your kind words of sympathy for Mom. She was a lovely person and a wonderful mother. Many’s the time we would enjoy fresh bread and rolls and I was lucky enough to have that all my life. She only stopped making bread a few years ago and was still knitting to the end. She will certainly be missed. I hope you and your family are all well and once again , thank you. Take care, Charlene.

    • Alanna, thank you for the kind words of sympathy. Mom was a lovely person and a wonderful mother. Many’s the time we both helped ourselves to the bread and rolls, and I am amazed you still have that sweater. I was lucky to have her for so long.It is only in the last few years she stopped baking bread, and she was knitting up to the end. She was both kind and generous and will be missed by so many. I hope you and your family are all well. Thank you again and take care. Charlene

  3. Florence brought sunshine to everyone. Deepest condolences to all. She so enjoyed Middle River and being close to family again. I always enjoyed our phone conversations. Many years ago, she arrived in Cape North at the museum’s anniversary celebration and much to her surprise she met her old friend and mentor at the doorway-Jack Yazer. How wonderful it was to see the joy in their faces as they renewed their friendship. It turned out that Jack and Zelda Yazer were instrumental in encouraging her to go into nursing. They had hired her to look after their daughter who was stricken with cancer when she was two years old. Florence’s care and attention was wonderful and they strongly encouraged her to go into the nursing profession! It was wonderful to be part of that moment and see the joy on their faces as they relived old memories.

  4. My mom, Christine Matheson who passed 2021, trained at Camphill and nursed with Florence in Neil’s Harbour. They remained friends throughout the years and enjoyed regular phone calls to catch up on the news and discuss knitting projects. Florence also called me several times after mom passed to see how I was doing. My deepest sympathy to all family members.

  5. Charlene and Malcolm. I am sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. I only found out about Eileen today as well. I worked with Florence many years at the VG. Many a patients mouth she threatened to wash out with soap and water!!
I live in Cape North again after 30 years in Halifax. My father Jack MacDonald from Sugar Loaf was a first cousin to Buck and Sandy through their Buchanan mothers. My mother was Jessie Lulu (MacLeod) MacDonald. Hope some of these names ring a bell for you.
