I’m still in shock about the passing of Barrie. Georgi and I had been friends of Barrie since we first set foot in East Lake Ainslie. His generous spirit and artistic talents combined to make him a teacher par excellence. Georgi took many of his painting courses in which he never failed to encourage her and thus helped her to develop her talents. For that I will always be grateful.

My deepest condolences to Barrie’s family! Barrie was a dear friend to my brother, Stuart, who lost his daughter in a car accident at age 7 and Barrie painted a picture of her in our field in Cape Breton. This painting was in our home for many years and now is in Stuart’s home in North Carolina. Stuart really appreciated Barrie’s friendship and gift in painting. Barrie was a gifted and talented man and will be sorely missed. The Knechtle family is deeply saddened to hear of Barrie’s sudden passing. We will miss him greatly. We are very proud to have his artwork displayed in our home. My love to the family, Heidi Knechtle
We were so sorry to hear of Barrie’s passing. My father, Dr. Fred MacKinnon, commissioned Barrie to paint images of the beloved Pictou County farm where he was raised. Our heartfelt condolences to the Fraser family. In September we visited Cape Breton and Barrie joined us for supper. Always interested in discussing family history, he asked if we had any further knowledge of John P. McKay … Barrie had painted a picture of JP and his father Ailean a Bodach up at the family farm at Rear East Lake Ainslie. By coincidence, soon after, we were able to locate that particular painting and send a copy back to Barrie, reminding him of his previous work. The John ‘Bodach’ McKay / MacKay descendants are forever grateful to Barrie for his ongoing assistance in reconnecting us with our ancestors. Don and Maureen McKay, Canmore, Alberta
Barrie was a kind, caring man and an amazing artist. He taught my students art, in We’koqma’q, back in the mid 1970’s. My thoughts and prayers go to Barrie’s family and friends. RIP Barrie.
We shared many memories while rooming together in Halifax when he went to the Art College. Also attended school in Inverness. Our sincere condolences go out to all the family and it must bring you peace that he was so well known and loved throughout the county and a far.
Please accept my deepest condolences on Barrie’s death. He was an avid birder as was my husband David. We attended many bird walks with Barrie. My husband died on Tuesday and by coincidence his funeral is the same day as Barrie’s at 2pm. My thoughts are with you all.

It is hard for me to visualize that our paths & interests will not bring us to some common meeting place…..once again, where we have that chance to catch up & share some amusing or factual gems of interest. However, I do know that each & every time I encounter any of Barrie’s beautiful art pieces or articles, just like the lake and mountains he so loved, he lives on.

I met Barrie at a social occasion in the late seventies when I was minister at Inverness/ Strathlorne, and three other churches in the county. One quickly gleaned that he was a spiritual, thoughtful and engaging person.
I extend sympathy not only to family, but to many in the area who knew and liked the man. He will be missed but leaves a legacy of goodwill and art.
May God’s grace and ever present hope go before his loved ones and neighbours.
Please accept my sincere condolences. I was very sorry to hear about Barrie. In addition to his obvious artistic talents, he was so wonderfully knowledgeable about local history and Gaelic culture around Lake Ainslie. He was a great help when I was writing my doctoral thesis, generously sharing his own research and thoughtful observations. Barrie will be missed by a wide circle of friends and family—but the artistic and cultural contributions he made to his community will long be remembered. Sìth dha anam.
Hello. Well… I just heard the news today from Robbie. Very sad to hear of Barry’s passing. He was a gentle man. I met Barry a couple of times and I swear my heart rate dropped being in his presence. Quite a soul in him.

I’d like to send my deepest condolences-I am very sorry for your loss.I first met him when we boarded at the same home of Mrs. Mildred Dooks . She was a pipe organist at Brunswick St. United church in Halifax. She had 3 requirements- vote conservative, no drinking, and you had to sing in the choir.
