Very sad to hear about the passing of Aunt Mary – a wonderful, caring lady to all she met. I remember fondly her laughter, her biscuits, sharp wit and always her kindness. I also remember her coming to say her last goodbye to her brother Duncan, my father, while she herself was grieving John Vincent – a very strong Lady indeed. May you find rest and peace now and rejoice in reunion of those who have gone before. Godspeed on your journey. It is sad to lose a parent.However we are sure you a left with great memories of a life well lived.
I had the opportunity to find my grandfather’s home late in life at fifty years old in Gillisdale.When I went to the door & identified myself as the daughter of Alexander Archibald Gillis Mary put her arms around me & welcomed me into her home.I met my cousins Vincent ,& Elizabeth.I cannot express how much it meant to me to have Mary explain what she knew of my father in life & death.I was able to return home & tell my two brothers & my grown children.
This family gave us their time & opened their home to strangers.We were made to feel that we truly were family & treated as such.
Mary proceeded to take us across country to meet my father’s sister Jessie in Mabou & three of her children.
I came away with a feeling of belonging & deep feeling of appreciation to this wonderful human being.She took the time to stop & truly listen about my journey to find the family roots.Vincent was so very kind & Elizabeth showed us pictures & filled in many blanks.
Mary will be remembered by me as a one of a kind,caring human being that showed me great strength.She held a treasure chest of family stories & history in her brain & I will miss what I did not ask in a couple of short visits.However this strong lady gave me something very precious some insight into my father who died at 40years when I was four.
We left this loving home with new recipes,family history & a great respect for the whole family in Gillisdale.Bob left with the nickname, “The bus driver” which he still calls himself today.
Goodbye Mary & thank you for everything you gave to me,your caring & your time.You will be lovingly remembered & missed.

So very sorry for your loss. Our sincerest condolences to all. My niece Carmen took my mother and I to visit your family several years ago and we were never more welcomed into a home. Mary proudly showed us the pictures on the wall of the family and graced us with her knowledge and wonderful sense of humour. (And yes we did leave with cookies).
It is with a heavy heart that I write this message to you. I cannot believe that she has left us too, but take solace in the thought of Vincent and her are together again. I can picture them and Dad together and the Gaelic, the stories/’tales’ flying. This thought warms my heart and makes me smile.
Someone once commented that it is a surreal experience to lose a loved one. That a person expects to see them or hear them like you usually would and if your like me, you will hear their voices in your head and think of them at special times. It hurts now but take comfort in the memories and keep each other close.
I wish I could be there with you all during this sad time. Just know you all are in my thoughts and prayers. I send my sympathies and hugs to you all. I will be to see you all when the weather and pandemic allow.

We were deeply moved to here that Mary passed away.The last time I saw her was at her husband Vincent’s funeral service and chatted with her at the Firehall where the big tea was being served.She was so surprised to hear my story of Vincent & I taking the Pipefitters trade together in Point Edward near Sydney many many years ago.Oh how her blue eyes twinkled as she held my hand and saying so happy she was that my wife Paula & I attended the service.I knew Vincent and his sons thru work at Stora Enso Pulp Mill.
It is with our sincere sympathy that we extend our condolences .
